Agriculture Grants

Agriculture Grants Detail
Since 1999, the Toward Sustainability Foundation in Massachusetts has contributed some $400,000 in support of a small grants program that I initiated and lead at Cornell.  We have used these funds to support research, teaching and outreach programs in organic and sustainable agriculture.  About 60 projects have been funded to date, involving fruit, vegetable, dairy and other livestock, and field crops farmers and researchers around New York State. Funded projects have included diverse topics such as.
Training for beginning organic farmers on the Central Coast will get a significant boost from a three-year U.S. Department of Agriculture grant to the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) at UC Santa Cruz.
The $665,000 grant for "Building a Foundation for New Farmers: Training, Resources, and Networks" was announced today by Congressman Sam Farr, D-Carmel, and UC Santa Cruz Chancellor George Blumenthal.
How can farmers battle marmorated stink bugs in vineyards or late blight threatening a tomato crop? Can urban trees help mitigate climate change? What breeding programs will keep American crops competitive? Cornell faculty and extension educators will tackle these and other questions this year with $9 million in Federal Formula Funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
The annual grants go to land-grant universities established as a result of the Morrill Land Grant Act. The act founded colleges focused on the practical teaching of agriculture, science and engineering; this year marks the 150th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln signing it into law.
